Madhya Pradesh does not surplus tigers: Forest Minister

Bhopal, July 15, 2010, Indicating that Madhya Pradesh might not give big cats to Sariska, Forest Minister Sartaj Singh on Thrusday said there are no surplus tigers in the state. "We do not have 'surplus' tiger," Singh told reporters. The Minister's statement assumes significance given that Union Environment and Forest Minister, Jairam Ramesh
has written to Chief Ministers of Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra, requesting them to 'provide' a few tigers for Sariska.
However, Sartaj Singh hurriedly added that the government has not yet received any letter from Ramesh in this connection.
Ramesh has sought tigers from the two states, including Madhya Pradesh with the highest big cat population, to bring "genetic vigour" in the new big cat population being raised in Sariska.
Singh said the Centre has asked the Madhya Pradesh government to form Special Tiger Protection Force, adding that under this three companies of 112 personnel each will be constituted and stationed at Kanha, Bandhavgarh and Pench Tiger reserves.
