Ujjain, Aug 13:
This ancient temple town has a shrine that opens its doors to devotees only for 24 hours in a year -- on Nag Panchami.
The temple, devoted to Nagchandreshwar, will witness a puja performed by the Collector and the Mahanirvani Akhara's Mahant Prakashpuri prior to opening of doors at midnight tonight.
In the immense premises of the world-renowned Mahakaleshwar shrine, one of the India's 12 jyotirlingas, the lowest section houses Mahakaleshwar while the second houses Omkareshwar and the third Nagchandreshwar. Several pilgrims from various parts of the country throng the premises on Nag Panchami.
Like every year, the Shree Mahakaleshwar Temple Management Committee and the district administration have made comprehensive arrangements to ensure security and facilities for devotees.
''In the Nagchandreshwar shrine's north is a rare and attractive idol of Nagdev. Mughal, Maratha and Rajput history speak of the importance of the Trikal Puja performed there. The Committee will offer worship at 2000 hrs tomorrow. Every devotee will be charged Rs 151,'' said Committee Administrator Anandilal Joshi. The temple has a throne comprising seven serpents and on it are seated Shiva and his consort Parvati. A Ganesh idol is placed nearby.
